How States Are Administering Opioid Settlement Funds

States are beginning to receive lump sums of money as the result of independent and multi-state settlement agreements with pharmaceutical companies and others involved in the distribution and sale of prescription opioids. With broad discretion as to how these funds may be used, state legislatures are acting to coordinate and direct the uses and disbursement of settlement dollars. Most states with enacted legislation have created legislatively appointed bodies to oversee dedicated opioid abatement funds, though structures and authority over allocation varies across states.
