Pioneering Behavioral Health Treatment and Therapy – State Approaches to Providing Coverage for ABA
Tuesday, October 20, 2015
3:30-5:00pm
This session will explore how states are including behavioral health treatment services, with a focus on applied behavior analysis (ABA) services for children and youth on the autism spectrum, within insurance benefits across coverage types, but particularly in Medicaid. The panel of expert speakers will draw from their different perspectives to offer a primer on providing behavioral health treatment and therapies to children and youth. An academic researcher and clinician will help to define ABA services, identify providers and the populations eligible to receive the services, as well as share findings on effectiveness. State officials will discuss different approaches to implementing this benefit, taking into account how these services interact with other state requirements and will share information about cost.

For individuals living with complex, often chronic conditions, and their families, palliative care can provide relief from symptoms, improve satisfaction and outcomes, and help address critical mental and spiritual needs during difficult times. Now more than ever, there is growing recognition of the importance of palliative care services for individuals with serious illness, such as advance care planning, pain and symptom management, care coordination, and team-based, multi-disciplinary support. These services can help patients and families cope with the symptoms and stressors of disease, better anticipate and avoid crises, and reduce unnecessary and/or unwanted care. While this model is grounded in evidence that demonstrates improved quality of life, better outcomes, and reduced cost for patients, only a fraction of individuals who could benefit from palliative care receive it.
