Research Analyst – Population and Public Health
About Us – The National Academy for State Health Policy – NASHP – is a nonpartisan, nonprofit forum of policymakers from across the spectrum of state governments, leading and implementing innovative solutions to states’ health policy challenges. At NASHP, we engage state leaders to solve problems and share solutions; conduct policy analyses and research; leverage state expertise to develop model policy solutions; disseminate information on state policies and programs; and provide technical assistance to states. We have an immediate opening for a Research Analyst to join our growing Population and Public Health team.
About You – You are starting to build a professional career in health policy and are especially interested in population health and you have a Bachelor’s in public health, public policy/administration or a related field and may have some work experience in state health policy. You are organized and detail-oriented, which contributes to your ability to balance competing demands for your time. You are a strong writer and a skilled communicator, able to quickly identify what is relevant and important to state policymakers. You do well working as a member of a team but can also function independently when necessary. You are willing to adapt to a hybrid work environment, coming into the office at least two days a week to spend time with colleagues.
How you will spend your time – Research Analysts play an important role in supporting the development and implementation of activities designed to assist state officials as they address health policy and program challenges. As a member of the PPH team, you will work on projects in population health, social determinants of health and equity. This will include advancing community-based workforce, supporting states in developing and implementing policies to reduce health disparities and promote equity and project work focused on COVID-19 response and recovery. Your key assignments will include:
- Assisting in planning and executing meetings, symposia and training sessions, preparing related meeting materials, drafting notes and meeting summaries.
- Gathering information on state policies and programs and in the analysis of these policies and programs, using literature reviews, key informant interviews and surveys, case studies and focus groups.
- Contributing to the compilation and presentation of data and information in a manner that is concise and accessible to busy state officials; this will include your involvement in the design, drafting, editing and publication of written materials, including briefs, fact sheets, reports, and proposals.
- Assisting in the development and implementation of NASHP annual conference sessions, which may extend to planning workshop content, securing and preparing speakers, and supporting state officials who serve on NASHP steering committees.
- You may also represent NASHP at meetings and conferences, which may involve travel once it is safe to do so.
You will need to minimum qualifications, including:
- Bachelor’s degree in health policy, social work, public policy or administration, public health, law or related area. Work experience in state government and/or state health policy is a plus.
- You are able to multi-task and balance competing demands and assignments, while producing high quality results in a timely manner
- Computer proficiency is required.
About working at NASHP – We are currently still operating remotely but anticipate transitioning to a hybrid work arrangement in April 2022. The Research Associate position is not suitable for a totally remote work assignment: NASHP has offices in both DC and Portland, Maine. As conditions related to the pandemic improve, we expect that we will return to in-person meetings and travel.
We require all employees returning to the office to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, and be boosted, as well.

For individuals living with complex, often chronic conditions, and their families, palliative care can provide relief from symptoms, improve satisfaction and outcomes, and help address critical mental and spiritual needs during difficult times. Now more than ever, there is growing recognition of the importance of palliative care services for individuals with serious illness, such as advance care planning, pain and symptom management, care coordination, and team-based, multi-disciplinary support. These services can help patients and families cope with the symptoms and stressors of disease, better anticipate and avoid crises, and reduce unnecessary and/or unwanted care. While this model is grounded in evidence that demonstrates improved quality of life, better outcomes, and reduced cost for patients, only a fraction of individuals who could benefit from palliative care receive it.
