State Refor(u)m Sets Eyes on South by Southwest
Just as all of you have joined State Refor(u)m to share implementation resources and successes, the State Refor(u)m team is eager to share this online network with a wider community. We’ve applied to showcase State Refor(u)m in a panel presentation at the influential South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive festival. We want others in government and technology to know how states can work together openly and efficiently online.
Appropriately for a conference on interactivity, a key criteria for presentation selection is a “popularity contest” based on online voting! We hope that you, along with your friends and colleagues, will take a minute and vote for our panel. You can read more about our proposed presentation and vote for us here.
What is the South by Southwest Interactive Festival?
South by Southwest (SXSW) is a Music Conference and Festival held annually in Austin, Texas since 1987. Originally, SXSW was a music festival to highlight eclectic music but has grown to include film and interactive components. SXSW Film and SXSW Interactive events bring about 32,000 registrants to Austin each year. SXSW’s longstanding goal has been to create an event that brings together creative people from all over the world to share ideas. The festival continues today with people sharing ideas and expertise on music, film and the Internet.
Why is State Refor(u)m a Fit?
As you know, State Refor(u)m, is an online network for health reform implementation. Our dream is to engage a broad community of health reform thinkers and “doers” across the country, to foster peer learning and support and speed the pace of innovation across states. We’re proud that you, our State Refor(u)m users, have made our corner of the Internet successful in a few short months. With nearly 1300 registered users and 600 documents shared, you are helping states implement health reform.
Vote for us on the SXSW panel selection site, and increase our chances of bringing this promising model to the inquisitive minds attending SXSW.

For individuals living with complex, often chronic conditions, and their families, palliative care can provide relief from symptoms, improve satisfaction and outcomes, and help address critical mental and spiritual needs during difficult times. Now more than ever, there is growing recognition of the importance of palliative care services for individuals with serious illness, such as advance care planning, pain and symptom management, care coordination, and team-based, multi-disciplinary support. These services can help patients and families cope with the symptoms and stressors of disease, better anticipate and avoid crises, and reduce unnecessary and/or unwanted care. While this model is grounded in evidence that demonstrates improved quality of life, better outcomes, and reduced cost for patients, only a fraction of individuals who could benefit from palliative care receive it.
