Webinar: Complex Care among Medicaid Beneficiaries with Comorbid Substance Use Disorders and Other Chronic Conditions
Wednesday, April 3, 2019
3 to 4 p.m. (EST)
The CMS Medicaid Innovation Accelerator Program’s (IAP) Reducing Substance Use Disorder (SUD) program area is hosting a national learning webinar from 3 to 4 p.m. (EST), Wednesday, April 3, 2019, about the critical importance of identifying and treating individuals with comorbid SUD and other chronic conditions. Participants will learn about (1) identifying and treating complex conditions, (2) the unique challenges and needs of the SUD population with these conditions, and (3) reasons that customizing approaches for this population is necessary. Additionally, participants will hear about one state’s health home approach to treating Medicaid beneficiaries with comorbid SUD and other chronic conditions.

For individuals living with complex, often chronic conditions, and their families, palliative care can provide relief from symptoms, improve satisfaction and outcomes, and help address critical mental and spiritual needs during difficult times. Now more than ever, there is growing recognition of the importance of palliative care services for individuals with serious illness, such as advance care planning, pain and symptom management, care coordination, and team-based, multi-disciplinary support. These services can help patients and families cope with the symptoms and stressors of disease, better anticipate and avoid crises, and reduce unnecessary and/or unwanted care. While this model is grounded in evidence that demonstrates improved quality of life, better outcomes, and reduced cost for patients, only a fraction of individuals who could benefit from palliative care receive it.
