Nancy Smith-Leslie
Nancy Smith-Leslie, Deputy Director, Medical Assistance Division, New Mexico Department of Human Services Nancy Smith-Leslie serves as the Deputy Director of the Medical Assistance Division of the New Mexico Human Services Department with oversight of the delivery of health care services through managed care contracts. For the past two years, she has been involved with implementation of New Mexico’s new Section 1115 demonstration waiver that integrates physical, behavioral and long-term care services through an innovative managed care program, Centennial Care, as well as with implementation of provisions of the Affordable Care Act specific to the Medicaid adult expansion. Prior to this position, she served as the bureau chief of the Insure New Mexico bureau, which administered the State Coverage Insurance program, a hybrid insurance product for adults that combined features of Medicaid and commercial coverage. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from Ohio University.

For individuals living with complex, often chronic conditions, and their families, palliative care can provide relief from symptoms, improve satisfaction and outcomes, and help address critical mental and spiritual needs during difficult times. Now more than ever, there is growing recognition of the importance of palliative care services for individuals with serious illness, such as advance care planning, pain and symptom management, care coordination, and team-based, multi-disciplinary support. These services can help patients and families cope with the symptoms and stressors of disease, better anticipate and avoid crises, and reduce unnecessary and/or unwanted care. While this model is grounded in evidence that demonstrates improved quality of life, better outcomes, and reduced cost for patients, only a fraction of individuals who could benefit from palliative care receive it.
